Match preview

Wales rugby fans still have nightmares about their infamous 2007 World Cup defeat to Fiji, who could give their battered and bruised hosts a nasty reminder of their qualities on Sunday.

Four victories in the subsequent five meetings with the flying Fijians, including wins at the last three World Cups, still haven’t healed the wounds inflicted by that loss 14 years ago and current Wales coach Wayne Pivac knows only too well the threat they pose having coached the Pacific nation between 2004 2007.

Now on the other side of the fence, Pivac has watched his team lose their last three home matches with South Africa the latest victorious visitors, grinding down Wales to secure a 23-18 win.

Pivac has made five changes from that setback, revamping a backline that sees wing Josh Adams trialled at centre in the hope of sparking the Welsh attack into life.

Fiji’s backline should have no such tryscoring issues with Josua Tuisova having been in explosive form for Lyon this year. He’s recalled to the starting line-up alongside Frank Lomani, who was rested for the win over Spain.

Too often Wales have struggled to get to grips with Fiji’s unstructured style and with four of the last seven meetings being settled by 12 points or less, the tourists look a fair price to cover a sizeable handicap.
