United Rugby Championship final predictions
The United Rugby Championship is coming to the end of its fourth season, and since it was born from the introduction of four South African teams to the Pro 14, Leinster, winners of the last four Pro 14 titles, have never reached the final.
In that same time South African teams have taken four of the six berths in three finals. The Bulls, runners-up to compatriots the Stormers in 2022 and again to Glasgow last year, are in their third final but are heavy underdogs as they travel to Dublin to face Leinster at Croke Park.
Leinster have shown their usual dominance in the regular season to finish top of the table with 16 wins in 18 matches, but the key question is whether they can shrug off the run of knockout blows in the competition.
The Irish side have lost in the semi-finals in the last three years, twice to the Bulls, and they went out at the same stage in the European Champions Cup this season when they were 20-point favourites at home to Northampton.
Their supporters will be thinking that surely they have to get it right this time, and there was a lot to admire about their 37-19 semi-final victory over holders Glasgow. Leinster ran in six tries, finally reproducing the bright attacking game they show through the season in the knockout stage.
But it's hard to see them enjoying a cruise against a side as physically and technically adept as the Bulls. The South African outfit can claim to have the best set piece in the game and their tight five can cause Leinster huge problems in the scrum.
It's in the Bulls' interests to make this a stop-start game and the weather could play into their hands as thunderstorms are forecast, and wet handling conditions increase the likelihood of scrums where the Bulls can assert some supremacy.
The South African side lost four matches this season, by margins of one, three, three and ten points, and six of the last seven finals have been settled by margins of no more than ten points. The last three, all involving South African teams, have been decided by the same margin of five.
None of the last six finals has passed the 40-point mark and given the chance of rain, backing the Bulls to stay within a 12-point line looks the best bet.
