Match preview

Exeter Chiefs are well placed to qualify for the Champions Cup for only the second time and should complete the double over Sale Sharks.

Rob Baxter's side opened their campaign with two bonus-point wins before having to dig deep to earn a victory away to the Sharks last Sunday.

Exeter scored three first-half tries but were reliant on their defence to close out a 22-20 victory after Sale dominated the second period.

With two home games left at Sandy Park, it would be surprising if Exeter don't progress from this pool and a home quarter-final is now their target.

Losing bonus points against the Chiefs and Glasgow mean Sale are still in the mix to qualify, but they have to win this game to have any chance and Steve Diamond has named his strongest possible side with England's World Cup star Tom Curry in the back row.

Trips to Exeter have not proved successful for Sale in recent seasons. They have lost on their last five visits to Devon with the average margin of defeat being 16 points. However, they can have hopes of covering a big handicap.

Sunday's other match in the competition is in Pool 3 where Clermont will be expecting a bonus-point victory against Bath.

The French side's 34-17 win in Somerset last Friday gave them control of the group which looks set to be decided when Ulster visit the Stade Marcel Michelin in the new year.
