Predictions

Leicester Tigers and Sale Sharks have each appeared in only one Premiership Grand Final over the last decade but one of the heavyweight duo will be heading to Twickenham this year.

Traditionally these two have been pragmatic sides who base their approach on forward power and a strong kicking game. However, the playoff semi-finalists have been noticeably more expansive this season and both regular-season meetings went the way of the home side by a double-digit margin.

Sale were effectively in playoff mode last week as they headed to Exeter for a must-win showdown. They didn't exactly revert to type in grinding out a 30-26 victory, but they were outscored by four tries to three by the Chiefs and their fly-half George Ford kicked six out of six from the tee.

Ford, a former Tigers favourite, will be up against dual World Cup winner Handre Pollard in the number-ten battle at Welford Road, and it is easy to see plenty of territorial kicking and a patient, cautious start to the game.

Home advantage is often key in the playoffs and Leicester, who will be spurred on by a passionate crowd, could eke out a success.

In the United Rugby Championship, Leinster are 12-point favourites against champions Glasgow as they look to end a run of three consecutive semi-final exits.

The Warriors were edged out 13-5 in Dublin in the final round of the regular season only last month when both clubs fielded strong teams and this looks sure to be a thrilling encounter.

The other URC semi-final is an all-South African affair between the Bulls and the Sharks in Pretoria. The Bulls are eight-point favourites having finished second in the regular season, but a star-studded Sharks side look sure to play a big part.
