Newcastle Falcons vs Northampton Saints predictions

Premiership champions Northampton look set to miss out on the playoffs this season, but they are the last English club left standing in the European Champions Cup and their team selection for Friday's trip to bottom club Newcastle gives a clear picture of their priorities.

The Saints face all-conquering Leinster in Dublin next month, and just two players who started last week's European quarter-final keep their place in the line-up at Kingston Park.

While Northampton recorded back-to-back knockout wins over Clermont and Castres, Friday's opponents Newcastle had two weeks off and plenty of time to reflect on their last-minute defeat at Exeter in their latest Premiership fixture.

The Falcons have won just two matches this season and nine of their 11 defeats have come by 20 or more points. They were also beaten 68-0 at Northampton on Boxing Day.

However, given the many changes to the Northampton side, including just a third Premiership appearance of the season for fly-half Charlie Savala, the hosts are worth chancing to stay within a big handicap start.

Newcastle have struggled to put points on the board this season but they have scored 11 tries in their last four Premiership matches – just one fewer than they managed in their previous nine – and with little at stake this match could open up allowing the Falcons to at least go close.
