New Zealand vs South Africa preview

South Africa will be licking their wounds after defeat to New Zealand at Eden Park last weekend, but the 2025 Rugby Championship schedule offers a chance for a reprieve when the Springboks face the All Blacks in Wellington on Saturday morning.

New Zealand have not been beaten in a Test match at Eden Park since 1994 and once again the famous Auckland venue witnessed a home victory last weekend as the All Blacks triumphed 24-17.

South Africa almost produced a late comeback to end their long wait for victory at that venue, which stretches all the way back to 1937, but New Zealand managed to grind out the win to remain top of the Rugby Championship standings after the first three rounds.

While Eden Park has proved to be a fortress for the All Blacks over the years, the same can’t be said for Saturday’s venue, Sky Stadium.

Rassie Erasmus has managed only a narrow win and a draw in his two Tests in Wellington as Springboks head coach, with a 16-16 draw in 2019, while South Africa won 36-34 in 2018.

Such is the strength in depth in the Boks’ squad that Erasmus has named a new-look backline and also named his squad well ahead of schedule as some sort of statement to his players and perhaps the opposition.

Putting all of their cards on the table early, South Africa will know that if they can put in an 80-minute performance, they can claim the win that will keep their Rugby Championship title hopes alive.
