Match preview

Australia are still smarting from last week’s controversial loss to New Zealand and they travel across the Tasman Sea with a point to prove.

A pulsating Melbourne Test was won by the All Blacks 39-37 thanks to a last-gasp Jordie Barrett try, with referee Mathieu Raynal credited with the assist by some Wallabies supporters.

Raynal’s decision to penalise Australia in the 79th minute for time-wasting just as the home side were on the verge of a famous victory will live long in the memory of all those who wear the green and gold, and it has lit the blue touch paper ahead of Saturday's rematch.

The animosity between the camps has raised the stakes even higher going into the final day of the Rugby Championship with both sides still in with a chance of winning the title.

New Zealand are top of the table, ahead of South Africa on points difference, and they probably need a big win to have a chance of regaining the southern hemisphere prize. Australia require a first victory at Eden Park since 1986 and a favour from Argentina against South Africa later in the day to snatch the title.

Bookmakers expect the All Blacks to claim the wide-margin win they desire - New Zealand have been made 15-point favourites despite their patchy record of four wins and four defeats in 2022.

The hosts are yet to put together a full 80-minute performance this year and a gritty Australia side which carries a number of try-scoring threats in their backline could stay in touch.

In a match which promises plenty of tries, the returning Ardie Savea looks worth an interest to cross the whitewash. The back-rower has been New Zealand’s standout performer this year and will no doubt be keen to mark the birth of his son last week with a ninth try in his last 19 internationals.
