Australia vs British & Irish Lions predictions

The Test series has already been won and lost but there's still plenty to play for in the final showdown in Sydney on Saturday. Victory will give the Lions their first series clean sweep in nearly a century.

Defeat to Argentina in Dublin in June seems such a distant memory as the Lions have gone on to win every match since and are one victory away from becoming the first team in the professional era to triumph 3-0 on tour.

The 1997 Lions, who won the first two Tests in South Africa as underdogs, couldn't find a way and although this year's tourists are heavy favourites, they won't have it all their way against the wounded Wallabies.

Neither team has yet strung together two convincing halves – the Lions were well on top in the first half of the first Test but had to fight back from 18 points down after 30 minutes of the second – and Australia showed last week in Melbourne that they can match up physically.

It would be easy to assume that the Lions might struggle for motivation after the euphoria of last week's win, or that the Wallabies will fall flat after throwing away a winning position at the death in that game.

But the signs are quite the opposite and that both teams are set to go on the front foot in an all-out battle – the Lions to make history and the Wallabies to regain some pride.

Throw a rainy and breezy weather forecast into the mix and we should be in for a fascinating contest.

There were six tries scored in the first Test and eight in the second but this clash may struggle to reach those heights.

One significant factor in producing two such open contests is that both teams have been forced to play catch-up and go on the front foot. The Lions led 24-5 early in the first half of the first Test while it was 23-5 to the Wallabies in the first half a week later. High intensity and difficult conditions may well produce a more cagey start and limit scoring chances.

We could be in for plenty of kicking and a relentless aerial battle, all pointing to a scrappy stop-start game.

Any tryscoring chances look set to come from close range, and the Lions' physical edge and gainline strength gives them the upper hand.

Five of the Lions' eight tries in the two Tests have come from forwards and last week's winner from Hugo Keenan is the only one from a back-three player.

Dan Sheehan, with a try in each of the first two Tests, is just 6-5 to go over again but his Ireland teammate Tadhg Beirne looks one to follow at a bigger price. The Munster forward also crossed in last week's second Test and made 11 carries, the most of any Lions player, and is nicely priced at 9-2 to go in again.
