Australia vs British & Irish Lions Test series predictions

The British & Irish Lions' last series win came in Australia 12 years ago and they return to face a Wallabies side who have continued a slow decline since then.

Australia hit a low point at the 2023 Rugby World Cup when they went out at the pool stage and they are a team in transition who are also missing some important names for the opening showdown in Brisbane.

So it's understandable that the Lions are just 2-7 to repeat their 2013 success, but the short prices about a 3-0 whitewash are easier to question.

Whatever team the Lions are facing, to win three successive Tests in another country is a huge ask and over such a short format the pressure mounts very quickly.

As soon as the first Test is over there is suddenly no margin for error and past tours have thrown up sharply contrasting games.

The Lions took the lead the last time they were in Australia with a narrow win in Brisbane, but the following week the Wallabies came out swinging in an ugly contest which they edged 16-15, while four years later the Lions were well beaten by the All Blacks first time up but finding a way to level the series.

The last three tours have all been level at 1-1 going into the final game and backing the Lions to take the series 2-1 offers far more appeal than taking 11-10 about a clean sweep.

The Lions look the right favourites and certainly have a huge opportunity to open up with a win. But Australia, who have had only one warm-up game this year, should find their stride and have players returning to make sure there is a proper fight for series honours.

One favourite worth siding with is Lions hooker Dan Sheehan, who heads the betting to be the top tryscorer in the series.

The make up of the Test side suggests pack power and set piece will be a key part of the Lions' attacking game, and while tries can be shared out around the backline, Sheehan is the key focus in the pack and should often be the man with the ball in his hands at the back of forward drives.

He scored five tries in this year's Six Nations and scored the first try on Australian soil in this tour against the Western Force last month.
