Argentina have started to pull themselves up in this rivalry, winning three of the last four meetings with Australia culminating in a record 67-27 hammering in Santa Fe last year.

But the Wallabies are improving from a steady decline, beating the British & Irish Lions in the final Test before claiming a stunning victory over the world champions Springboks in Johannesburg.

The hosts are five-point favourites in Townsville and will be determined to keep building in back-to-back home encounters with Los Pumas before their all-important Bledisloe Cup showdowns against New Zealand.

Australia vs Argentina preview

Australia and Argentina have claimed big scalps in the Rugby Championship this year and Argentina arrive in Australia having downed the All Blacks at home in round two.

They now face back-to-back games in Australia that could define how successful this summer's campaign is.

Los Pumas have won three of the last four meetings including a 34-31 victory in Sydney two years ago.

Australia have captain Harry Wilson back in the line-up after he missed the defeat in South Africa in round two, while fly-half Tom Lynagh is also fit and starts alongside Nic White.

Small margins to prove critical

Argentina always bring a lot of power and physical presence on to the pitch and Australia may feel the loss of giant forward Will Skelton, who was such a key part of their wins over the Lions and Springboks.

But Australia have looked so much more focused in their last three games and coach Joe Schmidt will have instilled in his players the need to keep making progress after losing the series to the Lions.

Argentina will have their moments but the greater focus and discipline in the Wallaby ranks should edge it for the home side.
