ACT Brumbies vs British & Irish Lions predictions

The British & Irish Lions field what looks like their strongest line-up for what on paper appears their toughest match outside the Tests, making the handicap betting for their clash with the ACT Brumbies something of a conundrum.

The Brumbies are the strongest of the Australian Super Rugby sides having reached the semi-finals this year, but just seven of their starting line-up from that defeat to the Chiefs are in action on Wednesday.

The Canberra outfit also have the distinction of having beaten the Lions, claiming a 14-12 victory in 2013. That match came just four days before the first Test, though, and featured the midweek Lions while Andy Farrell's line-up could well prove to be the Test team.

We've seen plenty of powerful ball-carrying from the forwards named for this showdown and the pressure will be on them a little more to make a dominant start after Saturday's error-strewn showing against the Waratahs.

One common thread of the Lions' games in Australia is that they have been close at half-time but this could be the one that bucks that trend. More familiarity among the Lions players and increased focus with the first Test looming should ensure more precision and accuracy in their performance.

And if the Lions forwards do lead the charge, scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park could be the man to cash in. The backs have outscored the forwards 14 tries to five in Australia but fellow number nine Alex MItchell has crossed in two matches and Gibson-Park looked sharp in his one appearance against the Reds last week following a spell on the sidelines.
