Widnes look stronger contenders in battle for survival

The Super 8s reach their conclusion on Saturday and the playoff picture will be complete, but the the most crucial clash of the day clash could be in the Qualifiers between Catalans and Widnes, with the winners guaranteeing their Super League status for next season.

The losers will get a second chance next week when they face Leigh in the Million Pound Game. The losers of that match will be relegated.

The Vikings have played better than the Dragons in the Qualifiers and look worth backing in receipt of more than a converted try on the handicap.

Widnes's previous trip to the south of France in March resulted in a 14-14 draw and although injuries will prevent them fielding as strong a side this time, coach Denis Betts is able to welcome back Aaron Heremaia and Corey Thompson.

Catalans had to rely on Hull KR's Chris Atkin missing a late, potentially match-winning penalty to beat a virtual Rovers reserve side 20-19 last weekend and look vulnerable favourites.

They have won only four home games by more than six points in 14 attempts in 2017.

In the other Qualifier, Tony Smith's nine-season reign as Warrington coach will come to an end after the home game with Hull KR.

With Robins boss Tim Sheens naming an inexperienced side, Smith is 1-9 to sign off with a victory and it may be worth a small bet on the Wolves covering an 18 point handicap. They walloped Featherstone 68-0 last time out.
