State of Origin: Game Two predictions
Just two of the 25 State of Origin series contests this millennium have been won by three games to nil, but New South Wales are odds-on to complete an Origin whitewash this year after an authoritative victory in Brisbane three weeks ago.
A dominant first-half display laid the groundwork for the Blues' 18-6 win at Suncorp Stadium, their third in a row over the Maroons following victories in the final two games of the 2024 series. And with this year's series heading to neutral Perth on Wednesday and then Sydney next month, Queensland have it all to do if they want to turn the three-match contest on its head.
They will hope to take a leaf out of New South Wales' book after the Blues lost last year's opener on home soil before winning the last two games to get their hands on the Origin shield, and Maroons head coach Billy Slater has gone back to the drawing board in a bid to restore parity.
Captain Daly Cherry-Evans has been jettisoned entirely, with Cowboys star Tom Dearden tasked with unlocking an uncompromising Blues defence which has conceded only four tries and 28 points in three Origin clashes since a 38-10 loss in the 2024 curtain-raiser.
If Queensland are placing their series hopes on an untested half-back pairing of Dearden and Cameron Munster, New South Wales are sticking with what they know as they seek to retain the Origin shield.
Returning stand-off Jarome Luai is one of just two alterations to the Blues' matchday 17 and the Samoan star reunites with former Penrith partner-in-crime Nathan Cleary, with whom he has won the last four NRL Grand Finals.
Luai is now with the Wests Tigers but don't expect him and Cleary to have forgotten how to operate together and few pairings have ever dominated the NRL in the way the New South Wales double act have.
Cleary was at his majestic best the last time the Origin rolled into Perth, scoring two tries and kicking eight goals in a handsome 44-12 win for New South Wales, who are two from two at the Optus Stadium having also won the first Origin encounter to be played in Western Australia three years earlier 38-6.
And with the former Penrith teammates calling the shots, the Blues can head to Sydney chasing their first series clean sweep since 2000.
