Match previews

Catalans Dragons and St Helens have had some ding-dong battles in recent times and Saturday's Betfred Challenge Cup quarter-final is unlikely to be any different.

The biggest of those was last season's Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford, where Saints edged out the Dragons 12-10, but things were more one-sided when the champions opened the 2022 league campaign with a 28-8 victory in round one.

Prior to that, Catalans did the business with a stunning golden-point victory at Magic Weekend when they came from 30-12 down with less than ten minutes remaining to snatch victory at St James' Park.

And things have been just as close when St Helens head to the south of France.

The Red Vee have won four of their last six trips to Perpignan but that quartet of victories came by just two, four, nine and four points and their latest trip to France saw them stunned 22-20 by bottom-of-the-table Toulouse.

So Saints haven't had things all their own way in France and the Dragons are a vicious beast in their own lair.

They have won 11 of their last 12 on home soil and will have their backers at 6-5 for another victory.

However, St Helens are too good to write off completely and they won't give up their trophy without a fight so backing the home side with a six-point start looks the way to go in what could be a very tight encounter.

The third of this weekend’s quarter-finals sees in-form Huddersfield entertain Hull at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Both clubs have made bright starts to the new season with the Giants third in the Super League standings and Hull not far behind them in fifth.

There’s not much to choose between the pair on form and perhaps the only reason why Huddersfield have been made narrow favourites is that they have home advantage.

However, Hull were eight-point victors when the sides met only a few weeks ago by the Humber and have won five of their last six meetings with the Giants, so there could be some value in backing the visitors.
