Wakefield Trinity remain favourites to finish bottom of the Betfred Super League despite a thumping derby victory over Castleford Tigers on Friday evening.

It was Wakey’s first win in 18 attempts against their local rivals and the 32-6 victory lifted them off the bottom and two points clear of relegation rivals Toulouse Olympique.

The French side, who have been bottom of the table all season, were showing signs of pulling off a great escape after winning three of their last four matches. But they were soundly beaten 30-6 by Hull FC on Friday and were leapfrogged by Wakefield in the standings.

Trinity are 4-6 with Betfred to finish bottom with Toulouse 11-10 shots.

At the other end of the table reigning champions St Helens can restore their six-point advantage over Wigan with a victory at Salford Red Devils on Sunday afternoon but it may not be easy as match quotes of 4-11 suggest.

Saints only just scraped past a battling Wakefield courtesy of a golden-point win last week and the Red Devils have shown a similar fighting spirit recently to lift themselves out of the doldrums.

Four wins from their last five have carried Salford into playoff contention having been in the lower depths of the standings for most of the season.

The Red Devils have claimed some big scalps this season and were edged 14-10 by Saints when they last met at the end of April.

A victory may be just out of reach again for Paul Rowley’s men but, having won their last two on home soil, they look a decent bet with a ten-point start at the AJ Bell Stadium.
