Hull KR v Hull
Sky Sports Arena, 7.45pm Friday

It’s five years since Hull KR won a home game against their city neighbours Hull FC but that hasn’t stopped punters backing Tim Sheens’s side to kick off the new Betfred Super League season with a derby win.

Rovers have been backed down from 7-4 to 6-5 as news of the Airlie Birds’ injury problems has filtered through.

Hull, who lost their last 11 games of 2018, are without a host of first-team players including Albert Kelly, Joe Westerman and Fetuli Talanoa. And on top of that Jake Connor is suspended.

Rovers have no such worries and are set to give debuts to a number of their new recruits.

Josh Drinkwater was highly influential in Catalans Dragons’ success in the second half of the season and Rovers hope he will have a similar effect at Craven Park as he combines with veteran half-back Danny McGuire.

A ground-record attendance is expected despite the Arctic conditions and it’s worth backing Rovers to send the majority of them home happy.

Conditions won’t be conducive to free-flowing rugby and with a low-scoring contest likely, it could pay to back the opening score to be a penalty.

Both Huddersfield and Salford are expected to struggle in 2019 and it’s surprising that the layers make the Giants such heavy favourites for their clash at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The Giants, who last their last five games in 2018, are without ace winger Jermaine McGillvary and look vulnerable to the Red Devils.

Salford won the corresponding fixture last season and look good business in receipt of a handy eight-point handicap start.

The betting looks about right in Friday’s final fixture where 4-9 Castleford host Catalans who go off at 9-4.

Cas finished 16 points above their opponents last season but have lost playmaker Luke Gale to a serious injury and the Dragons have some intriguing new recruits including Sam Tomkins and Matty Smith.
