Preview

Fierce rivals St Helens and Wigan lead the way after seven rounds of the 2022 Betfred Super League season.

Both have won six and lost one in the league meaning top spot will be on the line when the two convene at the Totally Wicked Stadium for their annual Good Friday showdown.

The bare facts suggest there is little between the sides and the threat posed by Wigan with ball in hand is likely to be the best Saints have come up against this season. But dig a little deeper and it's clear Saints are the ones to side with.

Kristian Woolf's hosts look even more fearsome as they bid for an unprecedented fourth Grand Final win on the trot. They had the league's best attack (202 points scored) going into the Easter double-header, by far the best defence (50 conceded) and have bossed this derby during their spell of Super League dominance.

Saints have won eight of the pair's last nine clashes and conceded ten points or fewer seven times in that run. Indeed, the average scoreline between the two sides since the start of the 2019 season reads 26-8 in their favour.

Take the Saints to beat the handicap and show they are still rugby league's top dogs.

That dust-up follows an equally intriguing Hull derby from Craven Park.

Hull FC have won their last three against city neighbours Hull Kingston Rovers but the Airlie Birds head into the game having lost their last two, while KR will be on a high after securing a Challenge Cup semi-final berth last weekend.

That followed an impressive 34-18 home success over Warrington in Super League and bookmakers are struggling to split the Hull rivals.

However, the Robins will be without half-back and top tryscorer Mikey Lewis for up to eight weeks and that may tip the balance in FC's favour.
