Betfred Super League predictions

Rugby league rivalries don't come much bigger than Hull FC versus Hull KR or Wigan against St Helens, but there is even more spice to the traditional Good Friday derbies than usual this season.

That's because the four sides occupy the top four places in Super League after seven rounds, headed by the Hull pair who could get a high-octane Easter feast off to a fitting start.

One of the Hull clubs will end round eight top of the pile and Rovers are in pole position after winning their first six games before a first loss of the campaign at home to champions Wigan last week.

The Robins faithful will be hoping that is merely a blip and last season's Grand Final runners-up had been in ominous form prior to their 28-12 defeat to the Warriors, beating Salford 40-0 and Leigh 30-0 before putting 50 points past Huddersfield and then beating Hull 32-16 in the Challenge Cup only two weeks ago.

That result arguably flattered the Black & Whites, who were trailing 30-0 after 50 minutes before adding some respectability to the scoreline in the second half.

Hull have already outperformed their dismal showing in 2024 to be second at this early stage – they won six points in total last season but have 11 after the first two months of this – and they recovered from their derby defeat in the cup to deservedly beat Warrington 28-16 last weekend.

However, they have had a terrible time of things in derby clashes recently, losing six of the last seven, and while it might be closer than in it was two weeks ago, an eight-point handicap is well within Rovers' reach if they are on song.

Derby wins between Wigan and Saints have been much more evenly shared, but the Warriors won the pair's last two meetings of 2024 after a 12-4 Easter defeat at the home of their great rivals and last week's win at table-topping Hull KR was a real statement of intent.

The champions have lost to Leigh in golden-point extra-time and Leeds 12-10 this season, so they could easily be seven from seven in Super League.

They boast the best attack and defence in the top flight, and while Saints are not far behind them in that regard, Paul Wellens' visitors have lost their three games against potential title rivals this season, losing to Warrington in the league and cup and 20-10 at home to Hull KR.

You can never write off the Saints but there is a feeling that they may be just shy of the level of Wigan and Hull KR, who are the standout sides in the competition.

A Friday feast concludes at Headingley, where Leeds are 1-20 to beat an injury-hit Huddersfield chasing their first win of the season.
