Betfred Super League: Betting tips, preview, predictions and player bets
Danny Brough a huge price for Man of Steel
Super League’s top individual award, the Man of Steel, has been revamped for 2019. It will no longer decided by an end-of-season players’ vote, instead a panel of rugby league legends will award points for the best players in every match.
That makes it similar to the Albert Goldthorpe Medal awarded by League Express since 2008.
That award has gone to a scrum-half nine times in 11 years, but rarely to the playmaker from one of the competition’s leading lights.
Castleford’s Luke Gale has won three times and so has Danny Brough.
Gale is out for the season through injury but Wakefield’s Brough has surprisingly been dismissed as a 100-1 no-hoper.
So has Hull KR’s new recruit Josh Drinkwater, while Salford’s outstanding talent Jackson Hastings can be backed at 40-1.
All three fit the likely winner’s profile perfectly.
Castleford flyer Greg Eden looks a solid 7-1 favourite to be crowned top tryscorer. He scored 18 times in an injury-ruined 2018 and overall over the past two seasons he has notched 56 tries in 44 games. No one else comes close to that prolific ratio.
Wakefield winger Tom Johnstone made his England debut in October having established himself as one of Super League’s leading finishers with 24 tries in 23 league games last season. He makes each-way appeal.
Zak Hardaker’s return to rugby league with Wigan after a drugs ban has made huge headlines and the full-back could end up as Super League top points scorer having assumed goal-kicking duties for the Warriors.
He has a career average of four tries every ten games, so can be expected to add a decent number of four-pointers to the tally too.
