Resurgent Lykina could make Bencic toil in high winds
Swiss youngster too short against Russian in her prime
Next Gen ATP Finals
Sky Arena, 1pm & 6.30pm Wednesday
Belinda Bencic is one of the major players in Hua Hin this week and she is perfectly capable of doing a favour for those outright punters who have backed her at up to 8-1.
However, while the latest Swiss star is not easily opposed, particularly after her opening 6-2 6-1 cakewalk against Giuliana Olmos, it's just possible that Ksenia Lykina could cause Bencic more trouble in windy conditions in Thailand than the oddsmakers expect.
Lykina, a 7-5 3-6 6-4 victor over top seed Qiang Wang in her opener, may finally be over her long-term woes. The Muscovite looked capable of becoming a top-30 performer when she first joined the WTA Tour, but a history of underachievement allied to a catalogue of injury issues had a seriously negative effect on her career.
Her opening win suggests better times could finally lie ahead for Lykina and if she has finally achieved full fitness, the 27-year-old could pose problems for her more illustrious opponent.
The outsider can be backed at a shade of odds-on with a start of 6.5 games and that could be worth a modest interest.
In the Next Gen ATP Finals, Daniil Medvedev fought back from the loss of the opening set in Milan to defeat his fellow Russian Karen Khachanov, while Hyeon Chung proved too good for Denis Shapovalov.
