Former England midfielder Ray Parlour backed the Three Lions to reach the quarter-finals and Harry Kane to finish as their top scorer in Russia at Racing Post Sport’s World Cup preview night on Thursday.

The three-time Premier League winner with Arsenal said: “England have a pretty easy group and they should be qualifying quite comfortably. The problems they will have will be in the quarter-finals. As a young team, making the quarter-finals would be a positive tournament.

“The bet that stands out for me in the England team is Harry Kane to be top goalscorer. He’ll take penalties and he’s the one who’s going to score you goals. Kane’s a great bet for me.”

The Romford Pele joined Racing Post editor Bruce Millington, Racing Post Sport’s Mark Langdon and professional punter Nick Goff for an in-depth look at all the 2018 World Cup betting angles.

The panel discussed England’s stage of elimination, who will finish as top goalscorer in Russia and picked their teams to lift the trophy, with Parlour favouring the defending champions.

“Germany are my pick,” said Parlour. “To leave Sane out shows you the depth of their squad. I really like Werner and I think they’ll have a brilliant tournament.”

Goff expects good things from Julen Lopetegui’s Spain, believing the climate could suit Spain’s approach.

“Of the four at the top, Spain are the ones I like the most. They’ll be the highest pressers in Russia. Spain will be suited to the conditions they are going to get in this tournament.”

In the top scorer market, Goff fancies Spanish star Isco as an outsider, while Langdon expects a strong run from Neymar or Kylian Mbappe.

Parlour was keen on Timo Werner for top goalscorer and the ex-Gunner also put forward a value selection in the group markets.

He said: “Group D is interesting because I think Croatia could come top of the group and Argentina second.”

You can watch the whole event on YouTube (see video above) and enjoy tales of Parlour's spells with England under Glenn Hoddle and with Gareth Southgate at Middlesbrough.
