Preview
Cameron Smith has been a consistent performer in the last few months but his US PGA Championship ended on a sour note with a final-round 77 and he may not be in for a great time at the Memorial Tournament this week.
His tournament form-figures are MC-65-MC-MC-68, so it could be worth opposing him in the top Australian market and supporting Marc Leishman instead.
Leishman has missed the cut in just one of his 12 efforts at the Memorial and finished in the top 20 in four of his last six visits, including two fifth spots in 2016 and 2019.
He failed to make the weekend at Kiawah Island by just one shot and has posted some good recent form, finishing fifth at the Masters, 21st at the Byron Nelson and, alongside partner Smith, enjoyed a win in the pairs event at the Zurich Classic.
While Smith may not be firing on all cylinders at Muirfield Village, the same could be said of two other notable Aussie challengers.
Jason Day has failed to finish in the top 20 in any of his last seven tournaments and his wife is in the later stages of pregnancy, so it would be no surprise if his mind was elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Adam Scott was second at the Ohio course two years ago, but he has been seen only at the Masters and the US PGA Championship since March 21 so may not be ready to fire.
In another tops market, Matthew Fitzpatrick could be the star performer in the Great Britain and Ireland heat.
Unsurprisingly, Rory McIlroy heads the list but he has been a bit hit-and-miss at the Memorial.
He has four top-ten finishes at Muirfield Village in nine attempts, but he missed the cut two years ago and was 32nd last time.
McIlroy struggled to recover from a slow start at the US PGA and despite winning the Wells Fargo Championship a few weeks ago, it could pay to look elsewhere.
Fitzpatrick was third in the tournament last year and is the sort of fairway-finder who can flourish at the Dublin course.
Top-five finishes at the Genesis Invitational and the RBC Heritage also bode well, as does his ninth spot at the Players Championship.
Shane Lowry was fourth at the US PGA but he has missed the cut twice in four tournament efforts having been 15th in 2017. And while Matt Wallace, who was fourth last year, has played well at times this year, his last couple of efforts have been disappointing.
