Wild Thing John Daly difficult to trust at Puntacana

Scott Piercy far more reliable

Scott Piercy is a class above his threeball rivals
1 of 1

Starts 11am Thursday

John Daly is arguably a better guitar player these days than he is a golfer, and Wild Thing can be opposed in his first-round threeball at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.

Daly, a two-time Major champion, will still command a decent gallery in the Dominican Republic this week, but at the age of 51 he is ranked 1,159th in the world and struggles to make cuts anywhere.

Scott Piercy can be fancied to outscore Daly and David Hearn in the midday Corales group. Piercy has posted five top-25 finishes on the US Tour this season, form that Daly and Hearn can only dream of. Daly has made only one of his last 14 US Tour cuts, finishing 72nd when he did make the weekend, while Hearn has missed three in a row.

Jim Furyk is a surprise entrant – the US Ryder Cup captain should be studying the matchplay golf taking place in Texas – and the veteran looks a short price in all markets. His 2017 campaign was terrible and in-form Argentinian Emiliano Grillo should hold sway in a 72-hole match.

Corey Conners, impressive in the Valspar Championship last time out and with form in this part of the world, is another appealing match-bet option against Kelly Kraft.
