Sam Allardyce favourite for Huddersfield manager job | latest betting

The betting proved correct as a market move on David Wagner to become the next Premier League manager to leave his position was justified as Huddersfield announced the German has left the rock-bottom Terriers by mutual consent and Sam Allardyce is the early favourite to come in at the John Smith's Stadium.

Sky Bet rate Big Sam 5-2 to take the role permanently in a market that will be settled should anyone be in place for at least ten matches. David Moyes is a 7-1 shot and caretaker Mark Hudson is 5-1.

Wagner, who was a 2-5 favourite ahead of Leicester's Claude Puel to go next, performed minor miracles to first take Huddersfield up to the Premier League from the Sky Bet Championship via the playoffs and then maintain Town's top-flight status the following season.

This campaign has been much more difficult with Huddersfield eight points from safety after scoring just 13 goals in 22 Premier League matches. Huddersfield are 1-16 to be relegated and 10-1 to stay up.

Saturday's goalless draw at Cardiff is their only point from the last 27 available and Hudson will be in temporary charge for Sunday's daunting fixture against champions Manchester City.

Huddersfield chairman Dean Hoyle told the club's official website:

"I had no intention of sacking David this season. Subsequently David – being the great man he is – came to us and made it clear that he needs a break from the rigours of football management.

"We discussed making that change immediately, but he also made it clear that he would give his all for the rest of this season before departing in the summer if we preferred.

"After a long discussion we all felt that David staying at the Club until the end of the season was best, but we’ve kept discussions open and we all now feel that the time is right to part ways.

"I know the term ‘mutual consent’ is often a byword for the manager being sacked in professional football, but this is a truly joint decision.

"David has a real, genuine love for this Club and, like me, his foremost concern in our talks has been to establish what is best for Huddersfield Town.

“I cannot thank David enough for what he has achieved. Along with his family, he will always be a friend to me and Huddersfield Town.”
