Match preview

After the jubilation of last weekend's long-awaited victory over Liverpool at Anfield, Everton's focus switches to improving their poor home record in 2021.

The Toffees have taken just one point from five Premier League matches at Goodison Park since the turn of the year, losing to West Ham, Newcastle, Fulham and Manchester City, but they have an ideal opportunity for a win over struggling Southampton.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's Saints won October's reverse fixture 2-0 at St Mary's during an excellent run of results that took them to the top of the table, albeit briefly, in the first week of November.

Those halcyon autumn days seem a distant memory for injury-hit Southampton, who have lost seven and drawn one of their last eight league games.

Their last three away fixtures produced a brutal 9-0 defeat to Manchester United, after debutant Alex Jankewitz was sent off in the second minute, a 3-2 loss at struggling Newcastle, who ended the game with nine players, and a 3-0 reverse at Leeds.

Saints caused Leeds problems early on at Elland Road but Hasenhuttl conceded that the second half was a "disaster" and his gloom was deepened by a late injury to midfielder Oriol Romeu.

The Spaniard is an important cog in the Southampton machine, starting 20 of their 25 league matches this season, and Liverpool loanee Takumi Minamino, who has scored twice in three league starts for Saints, may also miss the trip to Goodison.

The team news is more positive for the Toffees as top scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin and midfielder Allan should start after their substitute appearances at Anfield.

Carlo Ancelotti's squad is in such good shape that Seamus Coleman and Gylfi Sigurdsson could drop to the bench despite impressive performances against Liverpool.

With Calvert-Lewin back alongside the in-form Richarlison and James Rodriguez, Everton pose a serious threat to a Southampton defence who have conceded 17 times in their last four away league matches.

Ancelotti's men have struggled at home in the league in 2021 but they beat Tottenham 5-4 in a thrilling FA Cup fifth-round tie last month, just four days after a dramatic 3-3 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Only four of Everton's 12 league wins have come at Goodison this term and punters may well be wary of their inconsistency.

However, they were impeccable defensively at Anfield last weekend and, with virtually a first-choice starting 11, they should be too good for their out-of-form and depleted visitors.

Key stat

Southampton have lost their last four away games in the Premier League by an aggregate score of 17-2.
