Match preview

Three of Brighton's five league wins this season have come in 2021 but their recent successes have been the result of other teams struggling rather than the Seagulls themselves hitting a rich vein of form.

Brighton have seen off Tottenham and Liverpool by 1-0 scorelines since the turn of the year but both clubs have been on poor runs and were missing key players.

Spurs were missing primary marksman Harry Kane for their encounter with the Seagulls while Liverpool were blunted in the final third by the absence of Sadio Mane.

Those wins along with a 1-0 defeat of Leeds were the club's only victories in their last 14 matches and Aston Villa could expose their vulnerabilities when the clubs clash at the Amex Stadium.

Villa have been inconsistent this campaign but boast three wins in their last five matches and the second-highest tally of Premier League clean sheets this term with 11 - only Manchester City have more.

Not only have they been difficult to break down of late but key forward Ollie Watkins has also looked sharp in the final third, scoring in his last two matches against West Ham and Arsenal.

And although Kortney Hause is out of action, Villa have the bulk of their squad fit and ready, whereas Brighton are missing Adam Webster, Tariq Lamptey, Solly March, Florin Andone, Davy Propper and Alireza Jahanbakhsh - all players who would ordinarily push for a starting spot.

Brighton have managed only one league win on home soil this season and their troubles on the south coast could continue this weekend.

Key stat

Aston Villa have won six of their 11 away matches in the Premier League this season.
