Pole star Valentino Rossi can thrill his home crowd
Fast-starting Lorenzo lines up second at Mugello
Italian Grand Prix
BT Sport 2, 1pm Sunday
Valentino Rossi swept to a stunning pole position at Mugello and the Doctor looks a decent price to thrill his home fans with victory in the Italian Grand Prix.
It has been a miserable season for Yamaha with Rossi and Maverick Vinales having secured just three podiums between them from the first five races.
However, the bike seems well suited to Mugello, with Vinales set to start third.
Rossi is well known as a Sunday man, gearing his whole weekend preparations towards the race, so going fastest in qualifying is a good sign.
Since the start of 2007 Rossi has started 19 races from pole position. Of the 17 he finished, the legendary Italian won eight and missed the podium just twice.
Marc Marquez has dominated the season, winning the last three races, and is an obvious threat. However, the Honda rider, who starts only sixth, has won just once at Mugello, in 2014 - a poor record by his standards.
Jorge Lorenzo has the best recent record at the track. The super-fast starter looks a likely early leader from second on the grid, but he is still looking for his first win since joining Ducati and has a tendency to fall off the pace as races progress.
Andrea Iannone had been favourite for qualifying after dominating practice. The Suzuki rider is not without a chance from fourth on the grid, but he was disappointing in Spain having looked strong in practice so is probably best left alone.
