Petra Kvitova sails into last 64 at Flushing Meadows

Wickmayer dumped out of US Open

Petra Kvitova made a positive start to the final Grand Slam of the season
1 of 1

Petra Kvitova was 18-1 to win the US Open after getting her title tilt off to a positive start with a 6-1 6-4 victory over Yanina Wickmayer in New York on Tuesday.

Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion who has never made the final of a hard-court Grand Slam, powered to the first set against the Belgian.

It looked as if Wickmayer might level in set two until Kvitova fought back from a break down to finish with a wet sail.

Indian Wells heroine Naomi Osaka recently apologised to her fans for some below-par hard-court efforts, but the Japanese ace is not far from her best again judging by her 6-3 6-2 win over Laura Siegemund.
