Panama preparations can come to a sticky end in Norway
Visitors destined for defeat in final World Cup warm-up clash
Little is expected of Panama in the World Cup and that opinion is unlikely to change after a tricky trip to Oslo for their final warm-up game against Norway.
The visitors will square up with Belgium, England and Tunisia in Group G and have enjoyed reasonably successful preparations with back-to-back clean sheets since a 6-0 hammering by Switzerland in March.
They finished third in their group in the fifth round of Concacaf qualifying for the World Cup, behind Mexico and Costa Rica, but only Trinidad & Tobago scored fewer goals than Panama, who progressed to this summer’s showpiece event with a negative goal difference.
Norway are suitably testing opposition for the Panamanians and have won their last five games, scoring 17 goals in the process, although eight of those came against San Marino in October.
The Scandinavian side are fresh from a 3-2 victory over Iceland, another side who are flying out to Russia soon. Bournemouth’s Josh King and Crystal Palace’s Alexander Sorloth netted in the final ten minutes to turn the game around.
Panama boss Hernan Dario Gomez guided both Colombia and Ecuador to the 1998 and 2002 World Cup finals in his career but faces his toughest test yet in this tournament and even his tactical nous is unlikely to prevent a bitter end to their preparations against Norway.
