Thomas claims first Major with two-shot USPGA victory

Justin Thomas is 40-1 to win The Masters after the 24-year-old from Kentucky won his first Major at the USPGA Championship on Sunday.

Thomas, who had played in the final pairing of June's US Open, followed the victory of his close friend Jordan Spieth at last month's Open by claiming a two-shot victory at Quail Hollow.

Fellow American Patrick Reed, Italy's Francesco Molinari and South African Louis Oosthuizen were Thomas's nearest challengers as the winner pushed away from a congested leaderboard.

He hit a birdie on the tenth when his putt took an age to drop into the hole just when it seemed it would stay on the edge and he then had the Carolina galleries in raptures when he chipped in for birdie on the 13th.

Hideki Matsuyama and Chris Stroud, both of whom had claimed victories the previous week, saw their challenges slip away and third-round leader Kevin Kisner closed with a disappointing 74.

Ante-post favourite Rory McIlroy closed with his best round of the week, a 68, but he was able to only tie for 22nd on a course where he has won twice on the US Tour.

Dustin Johnson, who missed the Augusta showpiece with a back injury this year, is 7-1 favourite to win the Green Jacket.

The tour stays in North Carolina this week for the Wyndham Championship at Greensboro, while the Paul Lawrie Match Play and the non-televised Fiji International are also in the diary.
