Mudlark McIlroy in command with storms forecast for Surrey

Rory McIlroy has dominated the BMW PGA Championship through two rounds at Wentworth, the pre-tournament 9-1 favourite getting the soft going he loves and reaching 12 under par.

There were firm, fast conditions at Wentworth for the practice days, with a sunny weekend forecast, but heavy rain fell on tournament-eve to change the nature of the track, and thunderstorms have entered the equation for Saturday night and Sunday morning.

McIlroy relishes some cut in the ground and the former world number one is no bigger than 8-13 to convert his three-shot halfway advantage into the second PGA victory of his career.

The leaderboard is dominated by big-hitters, and although Saturday is expected to be clear and sunny, it is unlikely to be hot enough to take the moisture from the track.

With two European Tour maidens sharing second place, McIlroy is in command. He will be disgusted with himself if he lets this one slip, like he did in the Dubai Desert Classic on his last trip to Europe, but pressure seems likely to be exerted from Tommy Fleetwood and Alex Noren, who are lurking just off the pace. Francesco Molinari, Branden Grace and Matt Fitzpatrick may run into places.

Third-round twoball punters are pointed towards Grace (12.40pm), who is in a different league to Graeme McDowell these days, while the favourites in the final three matches of the day (Noren, Fleetwood and McIlroy) could comprise a solid treble against Robert Rock, Sebastien Gros and Sam Horsfield respectively.
