Accurate Austin Cook can serve up the birdies in his group

Texas Open favourite Sergio Garcia will be joined by Byron Nelson champion Billy Horschel and Heritage runner-up Si Woo Kim for the marquee threeball at 6.50pm UK and Ireland time.

Kim, who would have won the Heritage but for a rules blunder on the Friday and a misbehaving putter on the Sunday, is arguably the value option for the glamour group. A more appealing threeballs wager, though, is Austin Cook to defeat Martin Kaymer and Cody Gribble in the 7pm contest at TPC San Antonio.

Cook is a US Tour rookie who got off the mark quickly with an emphatic four-shot triumph in the RSM Classic at the end of November. His great strength is his driving ability – he does not miss many fairways – so he is well suited to difficult courses like San Antonio.

Cook should take a shine to the venue on his Texas Open debut and can leave his playing partners behind. Kaymer was rocked by a wrist injury which forced him to withdraw from the Honda Classic and he has been abysmal since returning to action. The German missed the cut by six shots in the Houston Open, then finished 48th in the Masters and 73rd of 77 weekend qualifiers in the Heritage on Sunday. A lack of fitness and form looks set to destroy his Ryder Cup hopes.

Gribble has already missed eight cuts this season, including his last six, and he also missed the cut by five shots on his Texas Open debut last year.

Backing Kaymer to miss the cut could also be rewarding. He was world number 12 on the only previous occasion he teed up in the Texas Open at TPC San Antonio. Even with that status and the levels of confidence which inevitably result, he carded rounds of 82 and 80 to miss the cut by 12 shots, so clearly failed to fall in love with the layout.

A third investment to consider is Dylan Frittelli to be top South African at 13-10. The 5-6 chalked up by bet365 looks nearer the right price. Frittelli is extremely comfortable in Texas, where he played his college golf, and he has worked his way up to 51st in the world rankings.

The long-game quality of Frittelli should see him grind out plenty of pars on this tough track and outscore his South African rivals Tyrone van Aswegen, Retief Goosen and Ernie Els in the process.
