Thursday's Olympic Games predictions: Germany rule the waves

Biles absence offers Russians another golden gymnastics opportunity

Three things to watch out for in the Olympic Games on Thursday.

The reigning world champs recorded the fastest time in the heats and have the bonus of not having to row in the repechage.

Gymnastics

Women's all-around final, 11.50am Thursday

Only a couple of days ago it would have been scarcely believable to suggest that anyone other than Simone Biles would claim gold in the women's gymnastics all-around final.

But the withdrawal of the US superstar yesterday means that there will be a new name on the title.

Brazil's Rebeca Andrade qualified second for the final behind Biles, while Biles' teammate Sunisa Lee came third in qualifying.

Russian duo Angelina Melnikova and Vladislava Urazova were on the coattails of the top three, though, and will be on a high after claiming gold in the team event on Tuesday.

British interest comes from the Gadirova twins - Jennifer and Jessica - who won bronze in the team all-around.

Rowing

Men's eight, 2.25am Friday

In contrast to the past three Olympics when they topped the rowing medal table, Great Britain had just a silver to show for their efforts on the water after Wednesday's finals.

The betting suggests that Team GB's best chance of gold in the remaining events at the Sea Forest Waterway is the men's eight, who line-up in the final in the early hours of Friday morning.

Gold medallists in Rio five years ago, Britain are 7-2 to retain their title but face stiff competition from Germany, Netherlands and even New Zealand, who have finished ahead of them in the heats and repechage.

Swimming

Men's 200m individual medley final, 3.16am Friday

Providing he comes through a semi-final in the early of Thursday morning, Duncan Scott will be going for a second gold of the Tokyo Games at 3.16am on Friday.

Scott, who took silver behind GB teammate Thomas Dean in the 200m freestyle and gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay, has a live chance in the men's 200m individual medley at the Olympic Aquatics Centre.

US star Michael Andrew is the bookies' favourite to take over from the legendary Michael Phelps who won this event in each of the last four Olympics, although Japanese hope Daiya Seto is another aiming to be crowned Phelps's successor.
