All of the big guns are still standing in the women’s Olympic football as the group stages give way to knockout football.
Team Great Britain face Australia in the quarter-finals after a rotated XI secured a draw in the final group game with Canada to ensure they finished in top spot of their section.
The Aussies came through a tricky group containing Sweden and the USA as one of the best third-placed teams after a 0-0 draw against the Americans in the final game, a result that saw both teams progress.
There will be an air of familiarity between the sides, with nine of Australia’s squad playing their club football in the WSL. Their primary threat is captain and Chelsea striker Sam Kerr, who has already netted three times in the tournament.
However, the Matildas have won only one of their eight games this calendar year, a 2-1 group game victory over New Zealand. Team GB also have the best defensive record at the tournament, conceding just once, and with the brilliant Ellen White having notched three goals in the group phase they should have enough to see off the Southern hemisphere side.
Elsewhere, Sweden face hosts Japan after breezing through their group with three wins, including a 3-0 defeat of USA. Japan progressed as a third-placed team and have scored just two goals, so the Swedes will fancy their chances of continuing their good run.
The most anticipated tie of the quarter-finals will be Netherlands' game against USA. This rematch of the 2019 World Cup final has a different dynamic this time around as the air of invincibility has disappeared a little from the American side.
Beaten convincingly by Sweden before a 0-0 draw with Australia in the final group game, USA have looked far from assured at this tournament.
Netherlands, on the other hand, have been in swashbuckling form going forward, netting 21 times in their first three games. The Dutch have been leaky at the back too, as seen in their 3-3 draw with Brazil.
But with the Americans far from convincing, Netherlands may be worth siding with to progress and atone for their World Cup heartache two years ago.
In the final quarter, Brazil take on Canada. The sides are seventh and eighth in the Fifa rankings but the South American side are warm favourites.
Women’s football legend Marta is the Brazilian captain and talisman and scored at her fifth Olympics in the group stages. These sides drew in a pre-tournament friendly and a similarly tight game could be in the offing.
