Preview
Novak Djokovic's dream of the Golden Slam are over but tennis diehards will still be setting their watches early on Sunday morning for a trio of finals.
The Serb was supposed to be the star name in the men's draw and favourite to add Olympic gold to his Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon crowns.
But classy German Alexander Zverev hadn't read the script, came from a set down to beat Djokovic, and is best-priced 2-5 to be atop the podium by taking care of Karen Khachanov in a final few would have predicted.
Number 12 seed Khachanov, however, shouldn't be dismissed lightly. He has already taken down two higher-ranked players – Diego Schwartzman and Pablo Carrena Busta, crushing the Spaniard 6-3 6-3 – and will fancy his chances.
If Zverev serves as well against the Russian, however, as he did against Djokovic, the German will take some stopping.
The layers have an even stronger view of the women's doubles final, which takes place at the same time.
They go 1-4 the Czech powerhouses and doubles specialists Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova against the Swiss duo of Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic.
The mixed doubles final is an all-Russian affair between fourth seeds Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Andrey Rublev against their unseeded compatriots Elena Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev. The latter duo have yet to drop a set; the seeded pair have been taken to a deciding tie break in each of their three games.
