Betting preview

The women’s Alpine downhill revolves around the fitness of Olympic and World Cup champion Sofia Goggia.

The Italian has won eight of the last nine downhill races she has entered, crashing out of the other while on course for victory.

Goggia bounced back from that spill to win next time out, but her following start, in a super-G, saw her crash again, suffering leg injuries including a small fracture of the fibula. That was only three weeks ago, but Goggia is in Beijing and ready to go.

The fearless speedster is usually odds-on for downhill events on the World Cup circuit, so with 3-1 available it could be worth taking the chance that Goggia is fit enough to deliver.

Italy boasts a strong hand in the speed events, with Goggia, Federica Brignone and Elena Curtoni each picking up a victory on the World Cup tour within seven days last month.

The women have had just one training run (with another scheduled for early this morning), which Goggia completed without incident.

Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami already has a gold medal from Beijing having won the super-G. She was the beneficiary of Goggia’s fall in the Zauchensee downhill and is the bookmakers' favourite.

Fellow Swiss Corinne Suter claimed the last downhill before the Olympics at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but several of the big names were absent from the startlist.
