Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal joint favourites for glory

New York heatwave taking its toll

Victoria Azarenka celebrates her easy win over Daria Gavrilova
1 of 1

The US Open is only three days old but the early action has seen some heavy victories and losses.

The first five results on day three, all women’s matches, did not see a set feature more than nine games as Elina Svitolina, Victoria Azarenka, Elise Mertens, Barbora Strycova and Anastasija Sevastova hammered respective opponents Tatjana Maria 6-2 6-3, Daria Gavrilova 6-1 6-2, Vera Lapko 6-0 6-2, Lara Arruabarrena 6-0 6-1 and Claire Liu 6-3 6-1.

It will be interesting to see if the quick wins continue when the heatwave in New York eases in the next day or two.

The oddsmakers could not split Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal for the men’s crown with both aces 5-2 shots. Roger Federer was 11-2 from 13-2 after his opening 6-2 6-2 6-4 win over Yoshihito Nishioka.
