Match preview

Chicago’s faint playoff hopes were ended by their defeat to Green Bay last week, but they can still make Kansas City work for a win at Soldier Field.

After a poor run the Bears had finally started looking like their old selves with four wins from five games before that Packers loss, with their defence in particular doing a good job at frustrating teams.

But they will need to be on song to keep pace with the Chiefs, who have won their last four games and saw quarterback Patrick Mahomes overcome a huge snowstorm to rack up 340 passing yards against Denver.

However their defence, so often a weak point for them in recent seasons, has also made surprisingly progress. Since losing 35-32 to Tennessee, Kansas City have kept their last four opponents to 17 or fewer points, recording eight interceptions in that time.

Given Chicago’s inconsistency on offence, the Chiefs should be able to bolster that impressive record further.

Andy Reid’s team still have a chance of earning a first-round bye in the AFC playoffs, so will no doubt be fully motivated to get the result, but with both defences in form a low-scoring battle could take place in a cold Windy City.
