‘Kryptonite’ was how Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson described Kansas City after a fourth straight loss to the Chiefs last season as the Ravens facing being brought to their knees again by the reigning AFC champions on Sunday night.

The Chiefs eased to a 34-20 victory in week three of the 2020 season when the Ravens were a better team than they are now, a team that hadn’t lost its three first choice running backs and best corner back to injury.

Injuries have really hit Baltimore hard and their flaws were exposed in Monday’s overtime loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Jackson had to contend with a pressure rate of 54.5 per cent as his offensive line resembled a turnstile, resulting in the Ravens failing to score in five of their first eight drives against the Raiders.

They can’t afford to let that many opportunities to put points on the board pass them by when they face the Chiefs, who managed to overcome the excellent Cleveland Browns 33-29 in week one.

Kansas City were not at their best against the Browns, trailing for nearly the entire game until Travis Kelce got the go-ahead score with 7:04 left.

A mark of a good team is to be able to win when not playing well and the Chiefs are certainly a good team, if not a great one. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was at his incisive best as he improved his remarkable September record to 11-0, a run featuring 35 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Against a Ravens defence that looks a long way off the elite unit we have become used to seeing in Maryland, Mahomes could enjoy another big day as the Chiefs look to cover the handicap for a fifth time in six meetings with Baltimore.
