The Kansas City Chiefs have won the AFC in every season since 2016, but 2015 champions the Denver Broncos (9-2) are in pole position to finish on top after the Chiefs' defeat in Dallas on Thursday saw them slip to 6-6. 

The Broncos will be looking to extend their advantage over the Chiefs and the LA Chargers (7-4) when they make the long trip to Maryland to face the Washington Commanders in the last game on Sunday's NFL Week 13 schedule.

The Commanders are close to being eliminated from playoff contention at 3-8 but starting quarterback Jayden Daniels is likely to sit out one more week before returning from an elbow injury.

Denver Broncos at Washington Commanders preview 

The Broncos and Commanders went into their bye weeks in Week 12 in very different situations. The Broncos (9-2) are going strong in the AFC West and can take a step closer to the divisional crown with a road win over their underwhelming hosts.

The Commanders season has been derailed by multiple injuries to starting QB Jayden Daniels and he looks set to wait one more week before returning to action after dislocating his elbow against the Seahawks in Week Nine. 

That may be a wise move as the tough Broncos defence could make life tough for him or his back-up Marcus Mariota.

The visitors are looking for their ninth successive win and while they are only 5-5-1 against the handicap after several narrow wins, covering the spread for this game looks within reach.

With the Commanders defence struggling, the Broncos should have an easier outing than in their narrow win over the Chiefs before their break.

The home side are only 3-8 against the handicap themselves and could let down their backers again in this tough test on Sunday night.
