Washington won the NFC East last season with a 7-9 record, helped by two head-to-head wins over Dallas, and they look the value handicap bet for their first meeting of the season with the Cowboys.

The Football team are getting a decent start at home but they have also been underdogs for their last four games – against Tampa Bay, Carolina, Seattle and Las Vegas – and won all of them.

Dallas began this season as the punters’ pals of the NFL, rewarding their handicap backers in their first seven games. But the handicapper has caught up with them and they have covered the spread in only two of their last five outings – a rout against Atlanta and last week’s home win over an injury-ravaged Saints team.

The Cowboys disappointed in their road loss to the Chiefs and suffered defeats as favourites against the Broncos and the Raiders. Both of those are 6-6 teams, as are Washington.

The improving home team are clearly not as far behind the Cowboys in terms of ability as it once appeared, and getting 4.5 points for the home underdog appeals.

Washington will be without tight end Logan Thomas and defensive end Montez Sweat, but neither of Dallas’ top two running backs, Zeke Elliott (knee) and Tony Pollard (foot), are fully fit.

Washington’s wins over Dallas last season came when the Cowboys’ starting QB Dak Prescott was injured but they can at least keep this contest competitive with a start of 4.5 points.
