Super Bowl LIV review

Comeback kings Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV in typical fashion, staging a storming late comeback to beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20.

Having trailed 24-0 against Houston and 17-7 to Tennessee in their first two playoff games before rallying to progress, the Chiefs looked on the brink of defeat in Miami as they were 20-10 down with less than seven minutes left in the game.

But three late touchdowns after a crucial conversion from QB Patrick Mahomes to Tyreek Hill on third and 15 gave the final score a totally different look.

The Chiefs had been 1.5-point favourites but looked off the pace early in the game and Mahomes was named MVP despite having one of his worst performances of the season for three quarters, throwing two costly interceptions.

A KC win by seven to 12 points had been an 11-2 shot, while the first touchdown of the game was a rushing play by Mahomes, who had been a 28-1 chance to open the TD scoring.

Mahomes was 11-10 for the MVP award, but those who backed 49ers rookie Deebo Samuel at 33-1 could feel unfortunate as he had 92 rushing and receiving yards and was a key player as the 49ers got in front on the scoreboard.

Super Bowl LV odds

Kansas City are 7-1 favourites to win the 2021 Super Bowl and bookmakers are not ruling out a re-run of this year's game with San Francisco 9-1.

Mahomes is not the only scintillating young quarterback in the AFC, though, and Baltimore, led by Lamar Jackson, are 15-2 shots. The Ravens were shocked by Tennessee in the divisional round this season.

New Orleans, knocked out by Minnesota in the playoffs this year, are 12-1 while New England, who were not in the Super Bowl for the first time in four years on Sunday, are 14-1 shots.

Quarterback Tom Brady confirmed in a TV advert during the big game that he would be returning to the Patriots next season, even though bookmakers had him as big as 4-9 to be back at Gillette Field as speculation over his future mounted last week.

Green Bay (22-1), Tennessee, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, LA Rams and Seattle (all 25-1) are next in the betting.

There's a new name in the list for next season with the Raiders moving from Oakland to Las Vegas. Jon Gruden's team are 66-1 shots.

Cincinnati are among the 150-1 outsiders. They have the first pick in April's draft and are widely expected to take LSU quarterback Joe Burrow.

Five teams will have new head coaches next season with Matt Rhule taking over in Carolina, Mike McCarthy joining Dallas, Kevin Stefanski leading Cleveland, Joe Judge the new man for the New York Giants and Ron Rivera taking the helm at Washington.
