The race to secure a playoff berth in this year’s Indian Premier League is reaching crunch time with only four regular-season games left for each side.

Kolkata Knight Riders occupy the final top-four berth but are coming under serious pressure from Mumbai Indians, who could usurp them if they win the showdown between the pair.

Mumbai have staged a remarkable recovery to get themselves in a position to challenge for a playoff spot.

The Indians claimed only one win from their first six outings but their eight-wicket win over second-placed Chennai 12 days ago has been the catalyst for a revival and they head to Eden Gardens having won three of their last four.

That sequence includes a 13-run win over Kolkata in their latest outing on Sunday, an entertaining affair that could have gone either way.

Having lost the toss and been put in to bat Mumbai made a blistering start, scoring 56 runs from their first six overs before losing their way.

If they can maintain that pace against the whole of the Kolkata attack rather than just the opening bowlers, they have a strong chance of a quickfire double over the Knight Riders.
