Marc Marquez kept his perfect record at the Circuit of the Americas by taking his fifth pole position in a row at the Texas track.

The defending world champion is 8-11 to follow up with a fifth consecutive course-and-distance win in tonight's race, but the price does not look great value.

Honda ace Marquez produced magic on his final qualifying lap to snatch pole position from championship leader Maverick Vinales.

The pair have appeared in a class of their own this weekend, and they were almost a second clear of Vinales's illustrious teammate Valentino Rossi who joins them on the front row.

Although Johann Zarco crashed out of the lead in Qatar and Marquez fell while in front in Argentina, Vinales has appeared to win the first two races of the season with something in hand.

Marquez is known for his spectacular riding style and staying on the knife-edge of control. While those characteristics were in evidence in his pole lap, the three-time MotoGP champion could struggle to keep the more metronomic Vinales at bay in the race.
