Sebastian Vettel ended a 13-month winless run with a surprise victory in the Singapore Grand Prix.

The German started the race as a 10-1 chance for victory after qualifying third, but led home his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc after his strategy paid dividends.

Pole-sitter Leclerc led in the early stages closely attended by championship leader Lewis Hamilton until the pit-stops, but both Ferrari and Hamilton's Mercedes team underestimated the effect of the undercut.

That's the name given to the advantage a driver gains from stopping for fresh tyres earlier and lapping quicker before a rival makes his own stop.

Vettel stopped a lap earlier than Leclerc and was so fast on his new rubber that he erased the 2.5-second gap that separated them before the stops.

Hamilton and his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas left it even later which proved a costly decision as 11-10 race favourite Hamilton finished fourth with the Finn fifth.

The result marked Ferrari's third straight victory after Leclerc won in Belgium and Italy.
