F1 news after Lewis Hamilton heads Mercedes 1-2 at French Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton extended his F1 drivers world championship lead to 36 points with a dominant victory in the French Grand Prix at Paul Ricard.

Starting from pole position Hamilton, a 4-9 chance for the race, came home 18 seconds clear of his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas.

It was the Silver Arrows' sixth one-two finish of the season, but their first in three races and Bottas had to fend off a late charge from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

Daniel Ricciardo crossed the line seventh for Renault but was later handed two five-second penalties for going off track and gaining an advantage on the last lap.

However, bets on the race are settled on the finishing order as it stood at the time of the podium ceremony.

Hamilton is now 1-12 to win what would be his sixth world title and is 10-11 to extend his race winning streak to five in Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix.

However, Hamilton has won just once at the Red Bull Ring, in 2016, and that was only after his then teammate Nico Rosberg suffered a brake issue when leading on the final lap.

Bottas, who won in Austria in 2017, is 11-4 to claim his third win of the season while last year's Spielberg victor Max Verstappen is a 16-1 chance.

Final French GP result (after Ricciardo's penalties): 1 L Hamilton, 2 V Bottas, 3 C Leclerc, 4 M Verstappen, 5 S Vettel, 6 C Sainz, 7 K Raikkonen, 8 N Hulkenberg, 9 L Norris, 10 P Gasly, 11 D Ricciardo (classified seventh for betting purposes).
