The pecking order at Assen looked very different in the dry on Friday than it did on a wet qualifying day, so the forecast of a 50 per cent chance of rain on race day makes things far from easy for punters.

Reigning champion Marc Marquez looked pretty quick in wet and dry conditions, so he's an obvious one for the shortlist, however he wasn't quickest of all on either day.

Yamaha rookie Johann Zarco nicked a first career pole position by 0.06 seconds ahead of Marquez.

The Frenchman has had a stunning first season at the highest level, but victory looks a tough task and he makes little appeal at 5-1.

Another who could go well whatever the weather is Danilo Petrucci. The satellite Ducati rider has had a superb season and was on top for much of qualifying.

He slipped back to third at the death, but that's still a front-row berth and the Italian is worth an each-way bet.

Andrea Dovizioso has won the last two races and looks overpriced to make it a hat-trick.

Dovi starts only ninth after crashing early in qualifying, but he was on a lap which would have put him on top at the time.

The factory Ducati team rider started from pole position at Assen last year and was in a close second when crashing out, but he does have form in the wet.

Championship leader Maverick Vinales set the pace on Friday and if it stays dry he would have a chance even from 11th on the grid, while his Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi is always to be respected.
