Singapore Grand Prix preview
Max Verstappen could have cause for a double celebration in Singapore this weekend as he bids to wrap up his second drivers’ title.
The Red Bull driver turns 25 on Friday but may decide to keep the champagne on ice for the time being in the knowledge that a sixth straight race win on Sunday could be enough to retain the world championship.
A lot needs to go right for the Dutchman to secure the earliest F1 title win since 2002 with Charles Leclerc, Sergio Perez and George Russell able to prolong Verstappen's wait, but bookmakers are very confident he can hold up his end of the bargain as Coral and Ladbrokes make him a best-priced 4-7 for victory.
Verstappen has won 11 of the last 15 races, and with six rounds to go he’s on course to break Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel’s shared record of 13 wins in a single season.
A first Red Bull win under the lights in Singapore for a decade appears highly likely, although the threat of rain has the potential to cause chaos and punters may be wise to keep stakes small.
Any hopes of a Ferrari challenge may hinge on help from the weather given their alarming slump in form, while the brutal humidity of Singapore could expose their ongoing tyre wear management issues.
Mercedes may prove the main threat to Verstappen once more having secured at least one podium finish in seven of the last eight races.
George Russell bagged the two most recent top-three spots and offers more value than his teammate Lewis Hamilton when considering who will fill out the podium.
The Silver Arrows have performed well in qualifying of late - vital to success in Singapore - and look strong on tight, twisty tracks such as the dramatic Marina Bay Circuit. If they can successfully manage any porpoising that comes from racing on a street circuit, Russell could post another top-three finish on Sunday.
