Fabio Quartararo looks quick enough to take another pole

Maverick Vinales and rookie sensation Fabio Quartararo dominated Dutch TT practice day at Assen on their Yamahas.

But while they have scored three pole positions between them in the first seven races of the season their speed is a bit of a surprise given that the Yamaha might not have been expected to excel at such a power circuit.

Quartararo claimed pole in Catalonia last time but his second-place finish in the race owed much to Jorge Lorenzo taking out Vinales, Valentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso as well as himself on lap two.

That melee left Marc Marquez to win as he pleased and extend his championship lead to 37 points over Dovizioso.

Lorenzo suffered a heavy crash in morning practice in Holland, fracturing a vertebra, and the Honda rider faces a month on the sidelines.

Marquez won at Assen last season but he was a long way off the pace in practice. Bookmakers still rate the Honda maestro as favourite but in a much more open market than we are used to seeing.

Quartararo is becoming something of a one-lap specialist, finishing in the top two in nine consecutive timed sessions and the Frenchman is worth backing at 3-1 for his third pole position.

He has also set the fastest lap in two races to give further evidence that no-one is faster when Quartararo hooks up a hot lap.
