Jorge Lorenzo could storm through the field in rainy Argentina

Mixed weather conditions led to a shock in qualifying for the Argentinian Grand Prix with Jack Miller claiming his first pole position.

A decision to switch to slick tyres on a drying track at the end of the session paid off for the likeable Aussie, and while he will do well to hang on for a podium finish, he showed his wet-weather prowess when winning in Holland two years ago having started the race as a 500-1 shot.

Favourite Marc Marquez lines up sixth. The race looks set to be wet but warm, so if it stops raining the track could dry out quickly and there is no-one better than the world champion at picking exactly the right moment to switch bikes in changing conditions.

It is raining again in Argentina this morning and with an unpredictable race in prospect it could pay to hunt some value.

Jorge Lorenzo was bitterly disappointing in the season-opener in Qatar, crashing out of an unpromising position while his Ducati teammate Andrea Dovizioso claimed victory.

Lorenzo didn't get it right in qualifying and starts 14th but he was mightily quick in the wet in final practice. The Spaniard showed wet-weather speed on a number of occasions last season and as a renowned fast starter he shouldn't be written off.

Danilo Petrucci is another wet-weather specialist who was caught out in qualifying.

The Italian starts down in 18th but grid position doesn't count for much in a race of changing conditions.

Petrucci managed four podium finishes last season and started his 2018 campaign with a solid fifth place in Qatar.
